Questions & Answers

This is intentionally not called FAQ.
What does RSU stand for?
It is a codename from the early days of the patcher, meaning 'Ragnarok - Simple Updater'. Also, please avoid abbreviating 'RO Patcher Lite' with ROPL, since that feels like saying 'Rolling On Patcher Laughing' (see ROFL). Some people have dubbed 'RSU' as 'Really Simple Updater' in the meantime.
While finalizing the GRF archive, the patcher stops with message that it cannot write the archive. Why? Is it broken now?
This error indicates either, that you ran out of disk space, or the archive reached the internal 4GB limit; in neither case the archive is defect. If anything goes wrong during the patch process, the archive is reverted to the state, it was in before patching.
While repacking the GRF archive, I had a power outage and now my GRF is 0 bytes, do I have to reinstall my RO?
No, in the same folder, as your GRF is in, should be a file called tmpdata.grf; this is the actual archive. Delete the zero-byte file, and rename tmpdata.grf to the correct name.
I want to use the patcher for other server than the provided ones, how?
Download the pure release and define the patch information by yourself.
[v2.4.5+]This no longer applies.
I can patch with the official patcher, but RSU is not able to connect, why?
The patch information might be wrong or outdated (report it). If that is not the case, the patcher was probably banned via user agent string. In that case, I accept the decision, and remove the server from list of supported servers instead of evading it.
Is this patcher an approved 3rd-party tool for use with official servers?
Not that I am aware of, you use it at your own risk.
Is this patcher approved by Gravity?
No, it does not seem to be banned either so far. So the stand-point is probably a neutral one, since the application is not malicious and not a hacking tool.
Is this patcher supported by Gravity?
No, see previous.
There used to be more official servers supported. Why are some of them no longer included?
[v3]Some of them have shut down (specifically aRO, cRO and euRO), others switched to a different patch system (rRO).
Why does the pure patcher not work at all?
The pure patcher has no patch information pre-installed, thus does not know, where to connect to. You have to explicitly set all information in the rsu.ini in section [rsu.patchinfo], or whatever you called your patcher like. See the ipatch plug-in documentation; you no longer need the plug-in itself though.
[v2.4.5+]There is no pure patcher anymore.
Patcher randomly fails with message 'Failed to retrieve patch_allow.txt' or fails to retrieve random files.
Check your Internet connection and make sure, that it is stable (especially WLAN networks manage high packet loss when set up improperly). If you have version 2.4.4 or older, download latest RO Patcher Lite version.
Patcher (kRO only) fails to connect to the file server or fails to retrieve files released before 2020-02-25.
You need a newer RO client installation. The old kRO patch server has been closed.
The patcher fails to start with the message that wininet.dll could not be found.
This problem can occur on fresh or broken installations of Windows 95. You need to install Internet Explorer (at least IE3, does not require to be default browser) and configure it's Internet settings.
My anti-virus claims the patcher being a malware or trojan-downloader.
If you got/downloaded it from other source, than this website, it might have been modified. Otherwise it could be over-sensitive heuristic, because RO Patcher Lite is in fact a 'downloader' and is able to update itself. Anyway, you should rescan it with VirusTotal to be sure; if there are more than 2 hits, it could indicate an infection and you should download a fresh copy from this website. For newer versions also check, if the digital signature is intact and has correct publisher.
I have received the patcher together with one or more .rpi files, what are those?
RPI files are RSU Plug-Ins, used to extend or modify patcher's behavior. They are ordinary DLLs, thus contain executable code. You should accept them only from a trusted source and scan them for viruses when in doubt.
[v2.4.5+]RPI have no effect anymore.
Can I run RSU in WINE?
RSU runs on WINE 1.0.1 or higher. Tested on Debian 5.0.4 with default WINE configuration. Earlier versions will not work properly, due to a bug in application execution. If the patches end up somewhere else, than in patchers folder, you have to start the patcher from terminal.
What is RSU Liniris?
Liniris is a native console version of RO Patcher Lite designed for Unix, Linux and BeOS. It's development is currently stuck, waiting for the 4.0 release of the patcher itself.
Would it be possible to make the patcher download multiple patches at once (parallel)?
No. It is not a matter of skill, but there are patches, that are supposed to be downloaded in given order (mostly GPF-in-RGZ crash workaround used by Gravity for large GPF patches).
[v4+]The patcher will download multiple patches at the same time, provided the connection speed is fast enough and the patch order and patch server allow this.
Why not implement feature XYZ in the patcher?
The patcher already does, what it should; patching. There is a plug-in interface available, so you can add features as you wish. If you think, that the patcher lacks something really necessary, then feel free to post it.
[v2.4.5+]This no longer applies, RO Patcher Lite is on diet.
May I link to the downloads?
If you want to direct someone to the downloads, link to the download section, rather than with a direct link, because releases might get obsoleted and deleted.
May I provide a mirror?
It is not appreciated to provide a mirror for the patcher download, but you are very welcome to provide a mirror for kRO patches.
Is RSU open-source?
No.
Is RSU really free?
Yes, completely. You will not encounter any nag screens telling you to register or upgrade to some kind of full version. It will not open any websites, unless you hit 'Help', which sends you to this page. I will not ask you to pay for it, neither now nor in the future. You may choose to donate to support my food supplies, though, should you find the link, that is.
What's the FTP link to server XYZ?
Some servers no longer use FTP for serving patches, but non-indexed HTTP. Otherwise TCPView is your friend.
